This is what love feels like

Halifax Pride is just a few days away! And why not celebrate by seeing a movie with Out @ the Movies?
In fact, there are two movies of interest this week: Beginners and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. And, if you time, it right, you'll be able to do both!
Priscilla is playing at Friday, July 15th at 11 p.m. at Park Lane (RSVP via Facebook).
But our movie outing is for the Ewan McGregor/Christopher Plummer movie, Beginners.
Synopsis
"Beginners" imaginatively explores the hilarity, confusion, and surprises of love through the evolving consciousness of Oliver. Oliver meets the irreverent and unpredictable Anna only months after his father Hal has passed away. This new love floods Oliver with memories of his father who -- following 44 years of marriage -- came out of the closet at age 75 to live a full, energized, and wonderfully tumultuous gay life. The upheavals of Hal's new honesty, by turns funny and moving, brought father and son closer than they'd ever been able to be. Now Oliver endeavors to love Anna with all the bravery, humor, and hope that his father taught him.

Out @ Wide Open Wide

What is Wide Open Wide? Well, it's from Queer City Cinema. What is Queer City Cinema? well, it's "the largest and oldest ongoing lesbian and gay film arts festival between British Columbia and Ontario." And this year, they're doing a road show to Halifax! Look for 28 short films and videos, including some locally made ones!

The plan: ...This is a lot less organized than our typical outing. Basically, all you have to do is show up. It does run late (I believe ending around 11) so there won't be time for post-event discussion for many.
Here are the details:
  • Saturday, June 25, starting at 7:30 p.m.
  • Location: Carbon Arc Cinema @ The Khyber
  • Cost: Just $6!!
  • RSVP via Facebook
  • More info? Official site.
A brief description (via their Facebook event): Wide Open Wide brings you twenty-eight queer films and videos that examine and play with notions of queer identity and that use queer experimental artistic expression to propose diverse ways of looking at sexuality, politics and queer media art itself. The films and videos selected represent artists from Victoria to Halifax and beyond and a variety of genres that collectively profile the interests and concerns of queer media artists.

I'll be there! Hope to see you there too.

Be Prepared To Be Scared

It's April. A time of new beginnings. But we must remember the past.
So let's all get our adrenaline rush with Scream 4!
With 44% of the vote, Scream 4 is the clear winner of this month's poll. Unfortunately, our second-place winner, Daydream Nation, doesn't appear to be opening in Halifax this week. Ditto for our last-place candidate, Win Win. Rio's playing lots of places though.

When: Tuesday, April 19th
Where: Empire 8 Theatres at Park Lane Mall.
Cost: $5.99
The plan: The movie starts at 6:50. We'll start congregating around 6:15. Look for the guy in the orange ball cap and glasses. We're going to head in to grab seats and snacks around 6:30. If you can't make it until closer to the movie starts, someone will have the orange ball cap on right up until the trailers. After the movie, it's time for coffee and conversation at the Second Cup.

February 22 = Out @ I Am Number Four

Let's start off with who didn't make it: The Eagle & Just Go With It each scored 3 votes. Unknown and From Prada to Nada tied for second place with 6 votes each. [FYI for those who wanted to see From Prada to Nada: it doesn't appear to be playing in Halifax.] So our winner must be...
I Am Number Four
Time to see a movie about a teenage alien discovering his super-powers and meeting girls. And one of those girls also has super-powers!

The Plan...
  • Location: Empire 8 Park Lane
  • Day: Tuesday, February 22nd
  • Time: A bit complicated. The movie starts at 7:30. We usually head in 15-20 minutes before the movie. However, kids are out of school for February break (up to and including most university students). And it's cheap night. So this could be quite busy!
To ensure we have seats, we'll be heading into the theatre at 7. That means you should arrive between 6:30 and 7.
  • As usual, look for the guy in glasses and an orange ballcap (that's me!).
  • If you arrive later, I'll wear the ballcap during the commercials and previews.
  • Tickets are $5.99 (and can be pre-purchased).
  • After the movie, we'll brave the February weather for a walk down to the Second Cup (corner of Spring Garden Road and Queen).
  • Once there, we'll discuss the movie and write up our reviews for the blog!
  • If you're on Facebook, you can RSVP to the event. And invite your friends!

Here's the full recap of what we're heading out to see:
I Am Number Four
Three are dead. He is Number Four. D.J. Caruso helms an action-packed thriller about an extraordinary young man, John Smith, who is a fugitive on the run from ruthless enemies sent to destroy him. Changing his identity, moving from town to town with his guardian Henri, John is always the new kid with no ties to his past. In the small Ohio town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected, life-changing events-his first love, powerful new abilities and a connection to the others who share his incredible destiny.

November = No-vember

Hey moviegoers!

Since the first Out @ the Movies night out (May 19th, 2009), we've never missed a single month. Despite times where I was away or sick, we've gone to at least one movie per month. Unfortunately, that's ending now. No movie for November. Sorry. I know some of you are new and wanted to keep the momentum going.
I do still intend to have a movie night on December 20th, so mark that in your calendars.
However, after that, I need your help. I have recently returned to university full-time and have classes on every night except Friday/Saturday/Sunday night. I know most of us have plans those nights so they don't seem ideal nights for Out @ the Movies.
So how can you help? I need volunteers to host movie nights!

You would arrive to the movie theatre early and wear something distinguishing so newcomers know who to look for. You would introduce moviegoers to one another and make sure everyone knows the post-movie plan. You'll also foster discussion amongst the group before leading everyone into the movie.
After the movie, you'll rally the troops to head to whichever coffee shop, restaurant, etc. is hosting the post-movie discussion. Once there, you'll facilitate discussion (but usually at this point, everyone is good to go on their own) and get moviegoers to write up reviews that we post here on the blog.
If you can take pictures as well, that's a great addition!
I can do the rest (writing up the blog, making facebook events, sending out e-mails, running the twitter account, posting to various forums and so on).
There are some details about volunteers you should know:
  • You'll have been to one (or more) of our movie nights already so you know how they've worked in the past.
  • You'll need to be able to commit to seeing whatever the movie is (and trust me, sometimes we will pick movies that you don't want to see).
  • You'll need to be somewhat outgoing as well.
My ideal scenario would be that a few of you (say 3 or 4) would volunteer. That way, some months, we'd have several hosts but when someone can't make it, there's a back-up plan.
So, if you're interested (and I hope you are because otherwise, we're going on hiatus until the summer) - please send an e-mail to halifax.out.movies@gmail.com. If you're somewhat interested but need to know more, send an e-mail too and I'll try and answer them.

Thanks to everyone who's come out to our movies and I hope we can continue the fun into the new year,
Kirk

Out @ RED

People like Bruce Willis. They like Mary-Louise Parker. They like comedy. They like action. They plan to like RED.
With 58.33% of the vote, RED was the clear winner of our October poll. In second place was Force of Nature: The David Suzuki Movie with 25%. Stone got half as many with 12.5% and Nowhere Boy lagged behind with just 4.17% of the vote. In dead last, with not even one sympathy vote: Jackass 3. You'd think someone would want to see a bunch of fit guys running around with little clothing but apparently none of you!
So it's off to see an action comedy about CIA agents who are Retired, Extremely Dangerous on Monday, October 18th.

The Plan:
  • Monday, October 18th <- NOTE we're trying Monday this month!
  • Location: Empire Theatres Park Lane
  • Pre-movie meet-and-greet: around 6:30 at the tables by the arcade. Look for the guy in glasses and an orange ball cap. We'll head in to grab seats at 6:30. If you're a bit late, I'll wear the ball cap until the end of previews.
  • Showtime: 6:50 p.m.
  • Finish: ~8:50 p.m.
  • Post-movie coffee: Second Cup at the corner of Queen and Spring Garden. This is your chance to get to know the other moviegoers and write a review for the blog.
  • Cost: $9.99 [not $11.50 as previously posted] and can be purchased online.
Remember: to help Out @ the Movies grow and flourish, we all need to spread the word. Why not bring a friend or invite them to the facebook event?
If this is your first time coming, don't be worried: it's a friendly group!
See you at the cinema!

Out @ Easy A

How will you celebrate the last day of summer? Will you take that one last swim? Maybe enjoy a patio somewhere? Or perhaps see a teen sex comedy with Out @ The Movies?
That's right! With 36.36% of the votes cast, our winner is EASY A!
Our other contenders: Jack Goes Boating tied with Alpha & Omega for last with 9.09% of the vote each. In our runner-up position, it was The Town and Devil; each with 22.73% of the vote.
As the seasons change, so do our lives. For the foreseeable future, there will be a significant format change for our outings. In the past, we've always gone to the earlier of the two evening shows. Which mean we did our socializing after the movie. Things will be a little bit different this time around. So...
THE PLAN
  • Date: Tuesday, September 21st
  • Location: Empire Theatres Park Lane
  • Showtime: 8:50 p.m.
  • Finish: approximately 10:40 p.m. (I'm just guessing here)
  • Cost: $5.99
  • Meeting Time: 8:30 p.m. @ theatre by the arcade; we'll purchase our tickets and head in to see the movie. [NOTE: No longer meeting beforehand at Daily Grind.]
  • Who to look for: the guy in the orange ballcap and glasses.
  • After the movie: Send your reviews in (either by posting on the facebook Wall or by sending an e-mail to halifax.out.movies@gmail.com) to get published on the blog!
If this is your first time coming, don't worry; it's a friendly bunch and it's an easy way to make some new friends in Halifax. If you've got a friend, why not invite them via the facebook event?
See you at the cinema!
Kirk

P.S. Just a reminder why so many wanted to see Easy A:

Our August 17th outing is...

Out @ Eat, Pray, Love
With 54%, Eat, Pray, Love is a clear winner. The competition still pulled in respectable numbers (Scott Pilgrim vs the World with 27% and The Expendables with 19%) but clearly the majority want to see Julia Roberts star in what is sure to be a blockbuster based on the best-selling novel.

When: Tuesday, August 17th; movie starting at 6:30.

Who: You, me and our friends! Feel free to invite your friends! You can also RSVP to the facebook event.
What: Tim Hortons. That's where we'll head after the movie - it's just across the street. This is your chance to chat with your fellow moviegoers and write up reviews for the blog!

Eat, Pray, Love
Cast: Julia Roberts, James Franco, Richard Jenkins, Viola Davis, Billy Crudup, Javier Bardem, Tuva Novotny, Ali Khan, Lidia Biondi, Arlene Tur

Newly divorced and at a crossroads, Gilbert steps out of her comfort zone, risking everything to change her life, embarking on a journey around the world that becomes a quest for self-discovery. In her travels, she discovers the true pleasure of nourishment by eating in Italy; the power of prayer in India, and, finally and unexpectedly, the inner peace and balance of true love in Bali.

Our July 13th outing is...

Out @ Despicable Me!

...Even though it didn't win the poll. It came in second place with a respectable 34.62%.
Our winner, The Kids Are All Right, had a whopping 53.85% of the vote. Unfortunately, it has a limited initial release. I found out from Empire Theatres it probably won't hit Halifax until late July (and that could change).
In these rare instances where the winning movie is not available (not released in Halifax on expected date or not showing at Park Lane) we move down the list to our number 2 flick. And what a fine second choice it is!
Despicable Me is an animated film about an evil genius (voiced by the always enjoyable Steve Carell), his arch-nemesis (Jason Segel AKA Marshall from How I Met Your Mother) while taking care of three little girls.
You can read the full description below. Did I mention he owns a pink space suit? Kinda suspect!

When: Tuesday, July 13th; movie starts at 6:30.
Where: Empire 8 Park Lane; we'll meet at the tables by the arcade. (If this is your first time coming, look for the guy in glasses and an orange ball cap.) At 6:10 we'll head in and grab seats.
How much: Don't forget tickets on Tuesday nights are only $5.99
Who: You, me and anyone you want to invite! You can send them this link (http://bit.ly/out13july) to the blog or invite them to the facebook event.
What: Dairy Queen. That's what we'll do after the movie so you can get to know your fellow moviegoers better and have a tasty treat.
Why: Fun times with fun people and a funny film.

Despicable Me
What it's about: In a happy suburban neighborhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbors, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru, planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon! Gru delights in all things wicked; he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen: a potential Dad.
Who's in it: Jason Segel, Steve Carell, Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Julie Andrews, Danny R. McBride, Kristen Wiig, Jack McBrayer, Jemaine Clement

The A-Team!

Second place went to Killers (24%), third to Get Him to the Greek (21%) and Splice came in last with a still-respectable 17%.

The Plan
  • Tuesday, June 15th - we'll meet up by the arcade at Park Lane, starting at 6. At 6:20, we'll head in to grab popcorn and seats. If this is your first time coming, looking for the guy wearing glasses and an orange baseball cap.
  • Reminder: tickets on Tuesdays are only $5.99!
  • The movie starts at 6:40 and is two hours long so around 9, we'll head over to Dairy Queen where you can get to know your fellow moviegoers better, get a treat and write up your review.

Out @ Iron Man 2

With 43.8% of the total vote, our movie night, our one-year anniversary, our outing on Tuesday, May 18th is:
IRON MAN 2
Looks like the awesomeness of the original (including the amazing performance of Robert Downey Jr) plus all the hype have convinced you that this is a movie worth seeing!
How did the competition do? Letters to Juliet and Robin Hood garnered 25% each and Takers brought in ... 8%. Well, it tried.
The Plan: We're going to see Iron Man 2 on Tuesday, May 18th at 7:10 p.m. at Park Lane. (Important note: There's also a 6:30 showing. We're going to 7:10. 7:10.). We'll gather at the tables besides the arcade starting at 6:30. If this is your first time coming, look for the guy in the orange ball cap and glasses. That's me (Kirk, the organizer of all this craziness) - come on over and say "Hi."
At 6:50, we'll head in to grab seats and snacks.
After the movie there are two options:
1) Head on over to Dairy Queen. That's right, it's the one-year anniversary of the first Out @ the Movies outing, so we're getting dessert.
2) Stay through the (rather long) credits to see a 30-second "sneak peak" at the next movie; then join us at Dairy Queen.
What it's about: In "Iron Man 2," the world is aware that billionaire inventor Tony Stark is the armored Super Hero Iron Man. Under pressure from the government, the press and the public to share his technology with the military, Tony is unwilling to divulge the secrets behind the Iron Man armor because he fears the information will slip into the wrong hands. With Pepper Potts and James "Rhodey" Rhodes at his side, Tony forges new alliances and confronts powerful new forces.
Who's in it: Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jon Favreau, Kate Mara, Leslie Bibb

Out @ Date Night

People like funny.

Which would explain why 57% of our voters chose our next moving outing to be:
DATE NIGHT
Tina Fey and Steve Carrell are two comedic greats and the shirtlessness of Mark Wahlberg probably didn't hurt its standings. Plus it's got James Franco and Mila Kunis!

How did the competition stack up? Kick-Ass got 27%, Death at a Funeral had 17% and A Shine of Rainbows had a staggering 0%.

The Plan:
  • Tuesday, April 20th - Meet at Park Lane, starting at 6:45. If this is your first time coming, look for Kirk (wearing glasses and an orange ballcap) at the tables by the arcade.
  • At 7, we'll head in to grab snacks and secure our seats.
  • The movie starts at 7:20 and is about two hours long.
  • After the movie, we'll head out to Second Cup grab a snack and talk.
If you're on facebook, you can RSVP to the facebook event. Want to share with a friend? Give them the link: http://bit.ly/OutAtApr20

You can also pre-purchase your tickets at Empire Theatres Web site.

The Plot: Claire and Phil Foster are a suburban couple slogging through their daily lives and marriage. Even their "date nights" of dinner and a movie have become routine. To reignite the marital spark, they visit a trendy Manhattan bistro, where a case of mistaken identity hurtles them through the city at breakneck speeds, into non-stop adventure. Remembering what made them so special together, Phil and Claire take on a couple of corrupt cops, a top-level mobster and a crazed cabbie as their date becomes a night they'll never forget.
The Cast: Steve Carrell, Tina Fey, Mila Kunis, Mark Wahlberg, James Franco, Mark Wahlberg, Kristen Wiig, Shawn Levy

THE MOVIE: Lawrence Talbot's childhood ended the night his mother died. After he left the sleepy Victorian hamlet of Blackmoor, he spent decades trying to forget. When his brother's fiancée, Gwen Conliffe, tracks him down to help find her missing love, Talbot returns home to join the search. He learns that something with brute strength and insatiable bloodlust has been killing the villagers. As he pieces together the gory puzzle, he hears of an ancient curse that turns the afflicted into werewolves when the moon is full. Talbot must destroy the vicious creature in the woods surrounding Blackmoor, but as he hunts for the nightmarish beast, a simple man with a tortured past will uncover a primal side to himself -- one he never imagined existed.

The cast includes Anthony Hopkins, Benicio Del Toro, Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving.

You can learn more about the movie @ http://www.thewolfmanmovie.com or IMDB.

THE MOTIVATION:
  • Sir. Anthony. Hopkins.
  • A modern re-make of one of the classic horror movie icons.
  • Victorian repression for a werewolf?!
  • I think we can all relate discovering something about ourselves others would want us to hide.
  • Fun fact: Director Joe Johnston created the designs for Yoda and Boba Fett in the Star Wars movies in his days as an art director.

You're invited to Out @ Daybreakers

Well, after two rounds of voting and 60% of the final tally, our decisive winner is...
DAYBREAKERS

Tickets are $8.99 for adults and can be pre-purchased online. After the movie, we'll head down to our local Second Cup to have a nice cup of cocoa (or coffee or tea) and have a nice chat about the movie. Doesn't that sound lovely?
If this is your first time coming look for Kirk (that's me!) in an orange ball cap. You can share the blog with your friends (http://bit.ly/6ovIFi) or RSVP to the facebook event (http://facebook.com/event.php?eid=277792310476).

THE MOVIE: "The year is 2019. A mysterious plague has swept over the earth, transforming the majority of the world's population into vampires. Humans are now an endangered, second-class species -- forced into hiding as they are hunted and farmed for vampire consumption to the brink of extinction. It's all up to Edward Dalton, a vampire researcher who refuses to feed on human blood, to perfect a blood substitute that might sustain vampires and spare the few remaining humans. But time and hope are running out -- until Ed meets Audrey, a human survivor who leads him to a startling medical breakthrough. November 24 = Out @ The Blind Side

Q: Which side are you on?
A: The Blind Side

The second Out @ The Movies outing for November will be to see Sandra Bullock's newest flick, The Blind Side, on Tuesday, November 24th.

What's it all about?
Based on a true story...
"Teenager Michael Oher is surviving on his own, virtually homeless, when he is spotted on the street by Leigh Anne Tuohy. Learning that the young man is one of her daughter's classmates, Leigh Anne insists that Michael -- wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the dead of winter -- come out of the cold. Without a moment's hesitation, she invites him to stay at the Tuohy home for the night. What starts out as a gesture of kindness turns into something more as Michael becomes part of the Tuohy family despite the differences in their backgrounds. Living in his new environment, the teen faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. And, as the family helps Michael fulfill his potential, both on and off the football field, Michael's presence in the Tuohys' lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own."

Out @ In The Loop

Q: Where will you be on November 9th?
A: In The Loop

Our first movie outing for November will be to see Atlantic Filmmakers Cooperative's Monday Night Movies' presentation of the hit indie British comedy In The Loop.

What's it all about?
"The film tracks the lies, misunderstandings, good and bad intel, and PR blunders that escalate into a full-blown (fictional) crisis in the Middle East over the course of a few days, in a few conversations and meetings, in a few corridors of British and American power. Though played for laughs, the movie demonstrates how the most incidental factors (leaked papers, hastily spoken soundbites) and players (aides, interns, and low-level government officials) can influence the course of history. "

If that description didn't help, take a look at the trailer:

Why see it? Because it's going to be hilarious! And that's practically fact: it has a 95% approval rating on RottenTomatoes! With comments like those of Lou Lumenick from the New York Post ("In the Loop is certainly the smartest and funniest movie inspired by the Iraq war."), you know you're curious!

You can sort of find out more at the movie's official site http://www.intheloopmovie.co.uk/ but you might be better off with the IMDB page.

THE PLAN:
We'll meet on Monday, November 9th for 6:30 when we'll head in to grab seats before the movie starts at 7. We'll meet by the tables in front of the arcade. In honour of the British/American theme, why not dress in red, white and blue? I'll wear my typical orange ballcap of course.
Tickets are $10 and are available for purchase starting at 6 that night.

After the movie, we'll head out to the Second Cup for some post-movie discussion and drinks!

You can RSVP to the facebook event (http://www.new.facebook.com/event.php?eid=171273910842) or share the blog with this quick link: http://bit.ly/3dI6gG.

Out @ Whiteout

THE RESULTS:
So... we got off a bit of a rocky start. Apparently (for the first time) the winner of our poll isn't playing at Park Lane. 9 won with 43% of the vote but we're going for our runner-up: Whiteout!

Why did 38% of your votes go to this Antarctica action flick?
  • Kate Beckinsdale - She's smokin' hot!
  • Great source material - I've read the original graphic novel. It's a riveting tale of murder and mystery at one of the most remote places on Earth.
  • A little bit of Canadiana - the entire movie was filmed on locations across Canada!
  • The trailer (see below)
THE MOVIE:
Whiteout
The story: Carrie Stetko, the lone U.S. Marshal assigned to Antarctica, investigates the continent's first murder, which draws her into a shocking mystery. Now, with only three days until winter, Carrie must solve the crime before Antarctica is plunged into darkness and she is stranded with the killer.
The trailer:

THE PLAN:
The movie is on Tuesday, September 15th at 7:19 at Park Lane. Tickets are $8.99 (pre-order). We will meet starting at 6:30 by the arcade. If this is your first time attending, look for the guy in the glasses and orange baseball cap (That's me, Kirk, the organizer).

After the whodunit that is Whiteout, we'll head down the street to the Second Cup. You'll have the chance to discuss the movie, meet the other moviegoers and share your review.

Hey! Are you on facebook? Why not RSVP to the event - http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=136797175740?

See you at the theatres!
